China’s astounding economic growth over the last 40 years or so means that the country now boasts the world’s second-largest economy, behind the United States. Many economists predict that China’s economy will outstrip the US’s within a decade. This rapid progress has gone some way to help Chinese work, education, and business opportunities start to skyrocket. As a result, many UK nationals are moving there in search of new professional possibilities.

If you’re considering relocating to China, there are a number of documents you will need to obtain beforehand. These can include a visa, an invitation from an employer or educational institution, and approval from the Ministry of Commerce for anyone who wishes to launch a business venture.

Once you have all the right paperwork, everything must then be legalised accordingly. This is called document attestation, a process which legitimises personal documents—like marriage, birth, and educational certificates—and business documents like contracts or certificates of incorporation for use in other countries. Attestation must be completed by the Chinese embassy in London to ensure any necessary documents will be recognised by the state.

In order for documents to be attested by the Chinese embassy, they must be stamped by a solicitor and the British Foreign Office (FCO) beforehand. This can be a lengthy and tedious process, especially if you don’t live in London. Travelling to the capital can be costly and time-consuming, especially as the embassy will typically keep hold of your documents for anything between one and seven working days.
