Kenya's Culture
Kenya is a multilingual nation, with Bantu Swahili and English serving as its two official languages. There are 68 languages spoken there in total, from Nilo-Saharan tongues like Dholuo and Kalenjin, to various Afro-Asiatic and Indo-European languages.
As a multi-ethnic country that’s home to over 40 different groups, Kenya is not pigeonholed by one distinct culture. However, tradition is deeply embedded in all Kenyan communities, and most inhabitants who live in rural areas still observe these customs closely. For example, the Maasai group continue to practise a pastoralist lifestyle by wearing shuka clothing (bright coloured robes wrapped around their bodies) and living in Inkajijik roundhouses. Tribes in the Northern and North-Eastern parts of the country are also largely unaffected by Western culture.
The main religion in Kenya is Christianity, which is followed by over 85% of the population. As such, many of the country’s national holidays are Christian events, such as Easter and Christmas. That said, holidays like Labour Day and Jamhuri Day (National Day) are also celebrated across the country with mass festivities.

Over the last three decades or so, Kenya has significantly reformed, generating sustained economic growth, as well as social development and political overhauls. New economic measures include privatising state enterprises, removing foreign-exchange controls and enacting anti-corruption legislation. Overall, Kenya is one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies, expanding by 5.8% in 2019, and its main industries include agriculture, manufacturing and tourism.

Visitors also enjoy travelling to the historical ruins of Gedi, a historical and archaeological site in East Kenya. A UNESCO World Heritage Centre believed to have been inhabited in the eleventh or twelfth century, Gedi features stone mosques, houses and a palace. Another site of great significance to the country is the Shimoni Slave Caves in Kwale, which depict the dark and painful story of slavery in the country. Other attractions within Kenya include the luscious Diani Beach, one of Africa’s best beach destinations, and Mount Kenya, the second-highest summit on the continent. Meanwhile, there is plenty to do in Kenya’s main cities of Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu, with museums, markets and restaurants aplenty.
