Travel to Japan - A mini guide

Japan is one of the world’s most iconic destinations. Here, ancient culture and mesmerising modernity collide, while its magnificent landscapes and cuisine ensure visitors truly are spoiled for choice when experiencing this wonderful country.

Japan's culture

Boasting an incredibly distinct culture, the country’s architecture, art and clothing are all world-famous. Japan’s most widely spoken language is Japanese, while Ryukyuan languages are spoken in Okinawa and parts of Kagoshima in the Ryukyu Islands. Shinto and Buddhism are the country’s two major faiths, but religion does not play a huge part in people’s everyday lives.

Japan is fascinating for its simultaneous immersion in the deepest of traditions from thousands of years ago, and its insatiable taste for modernity. Among the traditions still followed are the wearing of traditional ethnic garments like kimonos, having tea ceremonies and enjoying performance arts like sumo wrestling and Kabuki theatre shows.

Yet at the same time, Japan is incredibly advanced, with its invention of bullet trains and automated parking garages just some widely-recognised examples of its talent for tech. After all, this is the country that brought the world DVDs, emojis, and the Nintendo games console.

Japan's economy

Japan has long been both a global economic power and a Western ally. It has a highly-developed free market economy, the world’s third-largest overall. The country’s main industries include automobile manufacturing, electronics, and iron and steel, with some of the globe’s biggest companies hailing from Japan, including Toyota, Sony and SoftBank.

Japan's most popular destinations

Arguably Japan’s most iconic landmark is Mount Fuji, which is scaled by around 300,000 people each year. Located on the island of Honshū, the 12,000 foot active volcano is one of the country’s "Three Holy Mountains" alongside Mount Tate and Mount Haku.

Mount Fuji is situated just 62 miles south-west of Tokyo, and no trip to Japan would be complete without paying a visit to the capital city. Tokyo is brimming with attractions, from historical sites like the Meiji Shinto Shrine and the Imperial Palace to neon-lit skyscrapers, museums and theatres. The same is true of the country’s other major cities, with the likes of Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima all well worth visiting.

Other must-see sights in Japan include the breathtaking Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, the beautiful island of Miyajima, and Chūbu-Sangaku National Park, which incorporates the Hida Mountains—otherwise known as the Japanese Alps.
